Woodland Printers & Native Art Gallery

Harold Southwind

Born in Blind River Ontario, December 27th, 1976. Raised by my grandmother Gladis Owl exposing my brother and sisters to traditional ways. For she was a residential school survivor in Spanish providing for us with her traditional crafts making quilts, ash baskets, bead work, quill boxes and leather works. She also trapped for her materials gathering medicines along her journeys and teaching us to respect our surroundings to respect of what I'm doing "if it's frustrating, leave it alone and get back to it later" because your feelings are things that will show in your work. This teaching is imbedded in my work.
Growing up with crayons and coloring books, always day dreaming and drawing, being encouraged by people around me by saying something positive, gets a positive reaction. Moving around the North Shore a grade 7 teacher had taught me depth and perspective putting a brush in my hand and mediums of acrylic, oil and water colors which I progressed with nature all around me.
Being involved in the world of art I emerged expressing myself in the Woodland Style with solid black lines and colors, Listening to local Elders stories and native folk lore but honoring the images they gave me through their stories keeping them as stories and daily teachings.
Exposed to the outdoors of the north shore and its history of the people who lived here using the water ways to hunting and fishing grounds learning the ecology of the boreal forest learning to be a proud Nish .
Year 2000 enrolled into White Mountain Academy of Arts, expressing myself in different mediums, Sculpting, Wood Carving and Wood workings , but found comfort in painting.
Guiding for the Trails Of The Eagle Clan, sharing the heritage and traditions. Learning to keep an open mind to others and to grow from them. I try to use the Seven Grandfather teachings and Clan teachings on a daily basis to maintain a healthy and humble life style.
